[bug] can't open jpg or png images

When changing backgrounds or opening maps, I can't open .jpg or .png files. I can find them, selected them, but then it gives a "filetype not recognized" popup error. I can open .pcx fine. I had to convert a wallpaper to .pcx to use it as a background.

.BMP also works but there is the save as .bmp distortion that was already reported in the windows nightly bugs section.
